About Once Again
An imaginative, emotional debut novel for fans of Ann Patchett about one woman’s fight to save her daughter from repeating a deadly fate.
What if you had one chance to save someone you lost?
Isolated in the aftermath of tragedy, Erin Fullarton has felt barely alive since the loss of her young daughter, Korrie. She tries to mark the milestones her therapist suggests–like today, the 500th day without Korrie–but moving through grief is like swimming against a dark current.
Her estranged husband, Zac, a brilliant astrophysicist, seems to be coping better. Lost in his work, he’s perfecting his model of a stunning cosmological phenomenon, one he predicts will occur today–an event so rare, it keeps him from being able to acknowledge Erin’s coinciding milestone.
But when Erin receives a phone call from her daughter’s school, the same call she received five hundred days earlier when Korrie was still alive, Erin realizes something is happening. Or happening again. Struggling to understand the sudden shifts in time, she pieces together that the phenomenon Zac is tracking may have presented her with the gift of a lifetime: the chance to save her daughter.
Unable to reach Zac or convince the authorities of what is happening, Erin is forced to find the answer on her own, Erin must battle to keep the past from repeating–or risk losing her daughter for good.
Praise
“Simultaneously a suspenseful and action-packed thriller, a meditation on grief and loss, and an examination of time and memory, Hope’s debut is not to be missed.” —Booklist
“Though any mother would wreck the world to save her child, Erin must literally obliterate time to rescue hers. A chilling and visceral thrill ride that will both break your heart and lift your soul.” —Janet B. Taylor, author of Into the Dim
“Gripping, gut-churning, and heartfelt—full of lost and last chances.” —Max Gladstone, co-author of This is How You Lose the Time War
My thoughts
No words. OMG seriously, NO WORDS. (And you know that is not normal for me).
I am struggling to write this review because I really don’t know what to say. It was one of those books that was so gripping, unique and powerful that I’m still trying to process my feelings. So…. I am just going to make this easy. This book is amazing. You have to read it, I’ve never read anything like it.
It’s about Erin Fullarton, who is trying to come to terms with the loss of her daughter, 6 year old Korrie. Estranged from her scientist husband, she takes every day the best she can, but she can’t get over the loss of Korrie and the mistakes she made on that fateful day her daughter went missing.
In the meantime…side story…Zac, Erin’s husband is a brilliant astrophysicist, perfecting a model of a cosmological phenomenon that will effect time. A project that just happens to be occurring today, on the 500th day since Korrie went missing. (Do you see where this is going?)
Oddly, when Erin receives a phone call from the school, exactly like the one she received when Korrie disappeared, and time starts to flash back to that fateful day, Erin realizes that this may be related to the project Zac is working on, and she may have been given a chance to change her daughters fate. Unable to reach Zac, Erin decides to deal with this anomaly on her own to keep the past from repeating itself.
Ok so don’t let the science fool you. This is not a sci-fi kind of book, there is just some science incorporated into it to make this brilliant idea come to life. If you’ve ever wanted to go back and change the past, Catherine Wallace Hope has written an ingenious book that gives you a glimpse of what that experience might entail, and the challenges and decision making involved. It’s a suspenseful family life drama, that kept me up all night, and made my emotions run amok. I loved it. I was so engrossed I read it in one sitting. I almost wish I could read it over again just to re-experience the anticipation of turning every page to reach the conclusion. I absolutely loved this book and I highly recommend it. It’s not like any domestic/family life fiction you’ve ever read before.
I just would like to thank Catherine Wallace Hope, Suzanne Leopold of Suzy Approved Book Tours and Alcove Press for the gifted copy of this book for my unbiased and honest opinion for review.
